Camps & Clinics

Camp dates and details for 2020!

Looking for a summer camp that will be fun and challenging to body & mind?

SPACE COAST CREW SUMMER CAMPS are outdoors, fun, challenging, and a great opportunity to get middle school & high school students on the water this summer!

Have you heard that Space Coast Crew has a fantastic, year-long rowing sports team in Brevard from our current team members? It's true! We have a great organization, fantastic student rowers with supportive families and dedicated coaches who all work together to support our team. While our individual student rowers and our rowing teams are highly successful in competitive rowing regattas each year, our kids also learn work ethic, sportsmanship and character, healthy lifestyle choices, managing time, and other valuable life skills. Maybe most importantly, our rowers learn to work together, support each other, and often make life-long friendships. As a Club Team, our rowers come from middle and high schools all around Brevard and because of that, they make friends throughout Brevard also.

It can be hard as a parent to know where to start or how to approach your student's possible interest in a new sport. Our SUMMER CREW CAMPS are a great way for students to check us out, see what the sport is about, or just get outdoors and on the water during summer break!

The following explains in detail, safety protocols and the processes Space Coast Crew is implementing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are using local and state guidelines, as well as Florida Scholastic and US Rowing suggestions. Guidelines are subject to change and SCC will be in touch if additional variations need to be put into place. It is the intention of the team to be able to take campers through land workouts as well as learning on the water in small boats as part of these camps. Please print out the COVID waiver (attached to registration confirmation email) and bring a signed copy to the first day of camp.

Safety Precautions
Safety Questions
We will be asking every athlete these questions every day so as to limit the spread of COVID 19. If any of these questions are answered “Yes” they will be sent directly home.
  1. Have you had a fever in the last 7 days?
  2. Are you feeling ill today?
  3. Have you come in contact with someone who has had symptoms of  COVID 19 within the last 7 days?
  4. Have you or someone in your household travelled outside of Brevard County within the last 5 days?
All coaching staff will be wearing masks at all times during  boathouse practices. Athletes are encouraged to limit exposure with the public by wearing masks in public places.  We are likely going to require the campers to wear masks during time in boats on the water. We will notify families of any changes as camp gets closer.
Washing Hand
All athletes are required to wash hands at the start and end of practice. At the time of this memo, the restrooms at Oars & Paddles Park remain locked.  We will have a hand washing station set up at the boathouse.
Cleaning Equipment
Coaches and volunteer assistants will be provided a spray bottle with simple green/bleach and paper towels to clean equipment before and after they use it.
Work Out Environment All land workouts will be conducted outside the boathouse. Campers will be spaced 6 ft apart or greater, campers are required to bring their own labeled yoga mat or towel for their area. These should not be shared with anyone else. In the situation of inclement weather/thunderstorms, the workouts maybe cancelled and campers will be sent home, please ensure your contact information is up to date.
Campers / Athlete Behavior
All campers are to follow guidelines of being at least 6 ft apart from all people. Campers are to follow all directions of coaches and be actively participating in the workout. Every workout will be organized and supervised. Campers are not allowed to have contact with their fellow campers (i.e. high fives, hand shakes, and hugs or sharing water bottles or food). Campers will be warned one time and if they continue to break rules they will be asked to leave for the day. If they repeat the offense that week they will not be allowed to return to camp.

Did You Know? We also hold a few FREE Learn-to-Row Saturday Clinics each year!

While our Learn-to-Row summer camps are for youth only, our Learn-to-Row Saturday FREE Clinics are open to both youth and adults at Oars and Paddles Park! During our Free Learn-to-Row Saturday Clinics, interested youth (rising 6th-12th grade) AND adults who would like to learn more about rowing may expect:

- To check-in and verify waiver
- A welcome tour of the boat house and a description of the sport
- A demonstration of proper rowing technique on an ERG (rowing machine) with a chance to try an ERG
- PLUS an opportunity to go out onto the water for 15 to 20 minutes (with experienced rowers and coaches) for a live experience of what rowing is like on our Indian River Lagoon
- This experience takes roughly between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on boat availability and volume of attendees.

Those attending our Free Clinics will get to talk to our current 'student' Space Coast Crew team rowers and coaches - and also to current 'adult' rowing club members from the Row Brevard team. This is a great quick experience for students and adults who may be considering joining a rowing team, parents who are curious, and adult community members and friends and families of our current team members who wonder what it's like to row!

How do we determine the order of attendees getting on boats in the water? Clinic participation is based on both arrival order at the Saturday events and our best efforts to appropriately fill the seats of each boat with a mix of experienced rowers and clinic attendees. When you arrive at Oars & Paddles Park, look for the table near the boathouse to check in and let us know you've arrived and check to make sure your waivers are complete. Typical time investment is 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on wait times for boats.

Learn-to-Row CAMP Details

What are the Camps/Ages breakdown?
Middle School Learn to Row Camps are for rising 6th  - 8th graders.
High School Learn to Row Camp are for rising 9th - 12th graders.

What Should Campers Wear?Participants should wear clothing that is suitable for exercise and rowing every day; sneakers with socks, fitted sports shorts or spandex that won't get caught in the wheels of the boat seats, and a tank or t-shirt. If your camper has long hair, we suggest bringing a hair tie.

Water and Sunscreen: Please bring plenty of water to drink, more than you think is needed. Large refillable bottles are recommended as they hold a lot and are easy to tell apart from other campers' bottles. It can be extremely hot on the water in the afternoon, please don't forget sunscreen.

Verifying Where and When? Camp is held at our SCC boathouse - located at 1329 Banana River Drive, Indian Harbour beach, FL 32927 at the Oars & Paddles Park near Mather's Bridge. Morning Camp starts at 8:00 am each day, Mon-Fri, and ends at 10:00 am and Evening Camp runs 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm,  give or take a few minutes of getting equipment put away and closing the camp as a group with a big #GOSCC!! We camp rain or shine! Rarely is camp cancelled by coaches due to weather. If conditions are not safe to be in the boathouse, your camp coach will text or email the primary account holder for each camper prior to camp.

Swim Test Tips and Details: Campers are required to complete a swim test as a safety precaution. Please get swim tests completed and uploaded into your student's account prior to the start of camp. This allows your camper to jump right in and start camp on time. It seems to be easiest for most parents to take a photo of the completed test with their phone, then log into our website from your phone. Once logged in, go to 'My Account'. Here you will see your student(s) name. Click on the pencil next to their name and scroll halfway down to the 'documents and files/swim test section'. Here you can 'Choose' the picture you took from your phone and then click 'Upload'. Don't forget to scroll to the very bottom of the page and click 'Update' to ensure swim test is saved. Here is a link to our FORMS page of the website where you can download and print the swim test form to take with you to the pool/lifeguard of your choice!

About Registration: When you click to register a camp, you will be asked to log-in or create an account. After logging in, you will need go to 'My Account' where you can 'Add Players'. Add your student(s) information here. For camps or clinics you do not need to add a birth certificate. All other sections and waivers do need to be read, checked, and filled out (release of liability, t-shirt size, emergency contact info, etc.). The swim test form may be added later, at any time before the start of camp.

Once you have completed the registration of your camper and uploaded and saved their swim test, your student athlete is ready for Learn to Row Camp!

Please note the following; Payments are by credit card only. Please understand, payments are non-refundable. As a non-profit, volunteer-parent run student-sport-club, we cannot pay the charges associated with refunds as it would have to come from program dues our team members contribute. If a situation arises regarding this, we will do our best to accommodate with a different camp date, but we cannot just issue a refund.

We are excited about and appreciate your interest in our programs. We look forward to meeting your student camper as they have fun at camp and 'learn to row' with us!
