Space Coast Crew

Middle School (6th - 8th grade)

Welcome to the 25th Season for Space Coast Crew (SCC). Our Middle School program is open to all 6th - 8th graders in Brevard County, Florida no matter where you attend. Middle School Crew is Fun and Challenging!

As we are continuing to navigate our lives with COVID 19, there is still some uncertainty in regard to the Fall 2020 racing season. While we wish we could attend our traditional fall regattas, we don’t see that being in the team’s best interest at this point. Regattas are usually very high-contact events (a large amount of people in a small area) and the way that this virus spreads it is not safe for us to be around a large number of other teams. Instead, this year we are working with coaches around our local area to have some low-key scrimmages to help keep our athletes motivated and seeing progress. These would be with one or two other teams at a race site where we can spread apart from each other. If other teams are feeling unsafe or we feel unsafe then we plan to find ways to have inter-squad races and/or positive team-building events throughout the fall.

Reflecting on the current situation, we will be grateful to be able to train our athletes on a regular basis and compete in whatever way we can. While traditional racing is fun, what is most important right now is providing consistency and being able to be together as a team and family. Since the educational experience is being altered, we are here to provide a physical and mental outlet to help everyone cope with life’s challenges. Our hope is that if we train this fall and push ourselves at practice, in the spring season we will be able to return to our traditional races and be very successful.

Space Coast Crew Middle School Rowing is a recreational team program designed to introduce rowing to boys and girls attending any Brevard County school (6th, 7th, & 8th graders). The goal is to introduce rowing while maintaining an informal and fun atmosphere.

A full season of Middle School Crew runs from mid-August- April, with a break in December of each calendar year. Our Middle School team competes at a few regattas each year and learns healthy workout and lifestyle habits while picking up new skills, physical and mental strength in a fun environment.

2020-2021 Registration and Dues have been reduced by $100 for the Full year to account for the lack of Fall regatta registration fees and expenses. While we may not have traditional regattas in the fall, we still plan to hold scrimmages or events that will include the costs of the food tents as well as taking the boats off-sight and coach run regatta logistics. If the COVID situation is not improving by the Spring, adjustments will be made to Spring dues to reflect those changes. For now, the $1,350 annual fee, assumes limited races in the fall through scrimmages and inter-squad events and a normal Spring racing season. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Registration for the 2020/2021 Middle School Crew Team will OPEN July 26th!
While rising 8th graders may choose to join either the Middle School Team or the HS Team as a novice, this isn't a light decision; the HS team has a much more stringent workout regimen and practice schedule and is required to attend more regattas during the year.

Space Coast Crew Mission: To promote a developmental rowing program that embodies sportsmanship & ethics, principles of respect & responsibility, and personal growth through winning & losing with dignity & self-control.

Please find the registration package for the SCC Middle School rowing team. All sections regarding policies, waivers and notices must to be read, reviewed, considered and agreed to during the registration process. You will receive a confirmation email when registration is complete with a link to the Required Sport Physical form, and a link to the Swim Test form to print (if you don't have a swim test on file).

Registration and Dues cover program and equipment costs, a t-shirt, practices, regatta entry fees (spring), yearbooks, holiday and year end parties and food at the regattas. This program is for rowers in grades 6th - 8th. Rowers who are in 6th grade will need to meet with the coaches to ensure they are ready for the team prior to registration. This may be done through a summer camp or meeting coaching staff at the boathouse. Families will have a choice of two practice schedules for their rowers. This will help keep the groups smaller and more manageable. Both sessions combine on Saturdays.

  • A) Monday, Wednesday 5:15 -7:15 pm and Saturday 8:00 - 10:30 am
  • B) Tuesday, Thursday 5:15 - 7:15 pm and Saturday 8:00 - 10:30 am.

Regarding volunteer hours (10 hours per rower): We understand the concerns about fulfilling the hours due to the COVID pandemic, but the team still requires many volunteers to keep it operating. Many opportunities can be done in socially distance environment. Please select one or more ways you are interested in volunteering this year from the choices provided. Food Tent help is always needed and we are looking for families who have a diesel truck and are willing to help us tow the food trailer to and from regattas. If nothing is chosen, you will see the volunteer hours added as a dollar amount in checkout. This is up to you- we had families choose this last year. We are looking forward to parent and board engagement to plan and fund the things that make our rower's time at SCC great!

Each rower needs a YEARLY Sports Physical form completed. This form must be printed out, then filled out and signed by an M.D., then submitted in person, in a sealed envelope with rower's first and last name, as soon as possible. This should be delivered at the Registration day Aug 22nd.

Space Coast Crew requires EKG's for all athletes as is the policy for Brevard County Schools. Who We Play For is a Non-profit organization that is helping to make these available through out the community. Please visit for a list of upcoming EKG clinics. If your athlete has already had an EKG, you will need to provide a copy with the physical.

Please note: As a non-profit scholastic sports team, payments are accepted by Visa/MasterCard only and the card used for Registration will be kept on file securely by Blue Sombrero and charged. Dues based on the payment schedule you select. This year we are offering a monthly payment schedule or you may pay in full.
